[Review of] Wayne S. Wooden, What Price Paradise? Changing Social Patterns in Hawaii

Hawaii provides a unique opportunity to measure social change as it relates to ethnicity and race relations in the United States. This opportunity has been seized by sociologists at the University of Hawaii, using papers by their students to discover the patterns which emerge in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic society. In this way, researchers such as Romanzo Adams, Bernard Hormann and Andrew Lind have increased our understanding of the social forces at work in Hawaii. The pattern is continued by Wayne S. Wooden, who taught sociology at the Hilo campus of the University of Hawaii

A low-noise microluminometer for a bioluminescent bioreporter integrated circuit

This thesis presents the analysis and design of a low-noise microluminometer for a hybrid electronic/biological chemical sensor known as a Bioluminescent Bioreporter Integrated Circuit (BBIC). The microluminometer consists of photodetection and signal processing Both functions are integrated in a standard bulk CMOS process (HP 0.5 urn CMOS). The photodetection is first described in terms of physical operation. The implementation of photodetectors in a CMOS integrated circuit process is then presented. The signal processing system is analyzed, and the errors introduced by individual system components are described. A detailed system-level noise analysis is also presented The design of a low-noise amplifier is the focus of this thesis. The amplifier design is described in detail. Finally, the results from testing of the fabricated prototype are presented

Applications of Multi-Body Dynamical Environments: The ARTEMIS Transfer Trajectory Design

The application of forces in multi-body dynamical environments to pennit the transfer of spacecraft from Earth orbit to Sun-Earth weak stability regions and then return to the Earth-Moon libration (L1 and L2) orbits has been successfully accomplished for the first time. This demonstrated transfer is a positive step in the realization of a design process that can be used to transfer spacecraft with minimal Delta-V expenditures. Initialized using gravity assists to overcome fuel constraints; the ARTEMIS trajectory design has successfully placed two spacecraft into EarthMoon libration orbits by means of these applications
